If you are looking for a great night out and a valid reason to do so, mark the evening of Friday May 22nd in your diary and dust off your dancing shoes. The Canggu Classic Open Tennis Tournament commences with its sensational opening night cocktail party and an opportunity for guests to keep Bali clean and green.

Each year, The Canggu Classic Open Tennis Tournament chooses to support a different local charity and this year’s worthy recipient is Keep Bali Clean, an initiative aimed at reducing Bali’s prolific problem with rubbish. It is a community based program that assists in the drive to rid our island paradise of the plastic and non biodegradable refuse that currently clogs its waterways and beaches, threatening the very tourism dollars that the locals rely so heavily upon.

Ultimately the campaign is funded through T-shirt sales and donations from businesses and generous individuals. The program focuses on increasing the awareness for visitors and locals alike about choosing reusable bags, using less plastic and attempting to reduce their carbon footprint. Still in its infancy, the Keep Bali Clean campaign may have only been operational for a relatively short period of time however it has already managed to distribute over 30,000 reusable bags to consumers across the island as well as raising awareness via television ads.

In an effort to add a healthy boost to its fundraising coffers, 100% of the proceeds from the sweeps and raffles held throughout the Canggu Classic Open Tennis Tournament will go towards the Keep Bali Clean campaign and they will also operate a stall at the opening night cocktail party on Friday May 22nd.
The fun filled evening marks the commencement of the island’s annual international tennis event and kicks off in the stylish

Strike Bar adjacent to the Tennis Centre at Canggu Club West from 6pm. Tickets to the gala cocktail evening are included in the registration for all tournament players and individual tickets are available for non-players at a cost of just Rp 300,000 per person. Entry for children under twelve will be free of charge. The night promises to be an entertaining affair including two hours free flow cocktails and complimentary canapés as well as a live DJ to help you get into your groove and rock the night away. The players’ draw for the tournament will be unveiled at the opening party and is sure to spark some good spirited rivalry among prospective opponents!

Boot Camp’s Back on Schedule

It’s baaaaaack! Canggu Fitness Centre’s boot camps are making a return to the schedule and if you are looking to step up your exercise regime a notch or seeking that bootylicious butt (post Easter indulgences) then pay attention!

As a veteran ‘commander’ of nearly a decade of bootcamps in Australia and abroad, The Canggu Club’s Duane Ferguson is more than qualified to guide eager recruits through an hour of entertaining and effective exercise. A national finalist in the Amex Quest for Excellence Awards for Health and Wellness, Advanced Outdoor Training Instructor, Crossfit coach, ‘Thump’ boxing instructor AND founder of ‘Move It’ outdoor training, Duane incorporates a mixed bag of techniques and strategies to ensure you get the most out of your workout.

So why work outside when there is a perfectly good gym at your doorstep? Boot Camps continue to enjoy huge popularity due largely to the fact that they incorporate one important factor – they are OUTSIDE! Being outdoors means you are working out in public and with others. Natural instinct kicks in along with a bit of healthy competitive spirit and the desire not to be last means you work harder and get more out of your workout. Add to the fact that taking in your scenic surrounds is far more appealing than staring at the wall of a gym or small screen, boot campers are generally a social lot and these outdoor sessions double as a great opportunity to get together and have some serious fun!

Boot camps focus on a different style of training that encourages participants to work against natural forces such as gravity, inertia and momentum. Unlike the gym, where some of those machines look like they require a masters degree to manoeuvre, boot camps utilise slightly more ‘primal’ equipment such as sledge hammers, tractor tyres, ropes big enough to grace the bow of the Queen Mary, free weights, medicine balls, kettle bells and big expanses of grassy areas. It’s a great opportunity to expel some pent up frustrations and expend that excess energy if you ask me!

Granted, there are a lot of talented independent trainers out there offering outdoor fitness classes in a variety of locations, however Canggu Club Boot Camps have the added advantage of having access to a clean, flat, safe and grassy field. Being able to utilise Splash Water Park to incorporate stair runs, (yes, all 80 of them – collective groan) and the Crazy Creek lap pool for water resistance training (let’s not forget a refreshing post training dip) means classes are filled with a variety of different exercises to suit all tastes and levels of ability.

Each Boot Camp is 60 minutes, starting with a warm up. Classes are scheduled for Thursdays at 8.30am and Saturdays at 7.30am, commencing April 23rd. Having had the privilege of experiencing several of Duane’s classes on previous occasions, I can guarantee each session to be filled with fun, fitness, lighthearted ribbing and a good dose of Duane’s really bad jokes! A blessing really as you can chuckle your way through a grueling workout, the laughter taking attention away from aching limbs. No pain no gain!

Young Aussie Rules fans in Bali will now have the opportunity to learn how to play the game they love to watch!

With its inception in 1988 in Victoria, the program was originally known as ‘Vickick’ and after gaining support from the Australian Football League, the idea gained national recognition and its popularity steamrolled. Through weekly coaching sessions, participants will learn the skills of the game in a fun and social setting. The aim is to develop the fundamental motor skills required for the basics of future physical activity as well as learning to socialise as part of a team and interact with their peers. Training sessions are 60 minutes in duration and begin with drills for skill development and end usually with a game. The emphasis is on having fun and learning the skills of the sport.

The Auskick program at the Junior Sports Academy is run in collaboration with the Bali Geckos AFL team and participants will enjoy coaching by players from this established local team, affectionately known for their fun and friendly approach to the game and excellent sportsmanship on and off the field. With training sessions scheduled on the Canggu Club fields, Auskick participants are ensured a secure, flat and safe playing surface on which to hone their skills.
