Classy Tennis at Bank Mandiri Canggu Classic Open

Beverages flowed freely, old friendships were renewed and match strategies held close to the chest as the Bank Mandiri Canggu Club Tennis Classic kicked off with a fabulous opening night party at Strike Bar at Canggu Club West on Friday May 22nd.
The happy crowd consisting of players, spectators and staff, mingled and munched on tasty canapes and sipped frosty Albens Cider while enjoying the cool tunes from the resident DJ. A buoyant mood among guests and the irresistible enthusiasm of young ticket salesman Oscar, ensured healthy raffle sales and generous bids in the silent auction, with all monies raised going towards this year’s nominated charity, worthy local campaign, Keep Bali Clean. Proceeds from the silent auction had already tallied Rp12.3 million by the end of the opening party alone!

The party over, it was time to get down to some serious tennis and the busy match schedule commenced the following morning with the juniors from 10am across all three courts. Awesome tennis abounded throughout the week and some matches came down to the wire as many players were evenly weighted and competition was tight. As well as the impressive local Indonesian talent, players came from as far afield as Croatia, Australia, the United Kingdom and Hungary to try their luck at winning a piece of the prize pool.

The dynamic UK and Bali duo of Tim Baker and Komang Maryati were too much for well known locals Sana Darmawan and Nonik, who were defeated in the Open Mixed Doubles in a 12-10 tie breaker. Canggu Club head tennis coach Paul McCabe and his Hungarian partner Csonka Gabor snatched victory from Tim Baker and Sana Darmawan in the Open Men’s Doubles final. In the the Open Women’s Singles final, local favourite Nonik defeated talented newcomer Mia Davonar from Yogyakarta in three sets and Csonka Gabor clinched the Men’s Open Singles title from home grown talent Bagas Krisnamukti, who had earlier taken out four time Canggu Classic winner, Sana Darmawan in the semis.

It was a terrific week long display of sportsmanship from all players; juniors, seniors, open and amateur competitors alike, but special mention must go to the winner of the Amateur Men’s Singles – Eskar Revilla. At just 12 years of age, he is the youngest to ever win this event at the Canggu Classic!

The tennis over for another year, racquets were covered, balls collected and the crowd made its way over to the Canggu Club Verandah Bar to enjoy an Indonesian buffet style dinner and to await the trophy presentations and raffle draw. With incredible prizes on offer, the likes of hotel accommodation, meal vouchers and brunch and spa visits, some of which were over the value of US$500, it was no wonder the crowd was more than happy to hang around and partake in an evening of fabulous food and entertainment.

Done and dusted the Mandiri Canggu Club Tennis Classic may be for 2015, but you can risk your last Rupiah that tennis hopefuls are already contemplating training, strategies and skills to return in 2016 to vie for that coveted Canggu cup. Stay tuned for the dates for next year’s competition!

Body Temple Hair Has Blonde in the Bag!

20150603-canggunews-Body-Temple-Hair

I’ve lost count of the times my blonde Bali friends have bemoaned the state and shade of their luscious locks post local salon visit, even after some have paid quite considerably for the pleasure of a plush chair and purportedly ‘professional’ treatments! Being a blonde (well okay…..bottle blonde) myself, I have oft struggled to find (and keep!) a stylist who knows how to colour, cut and manage my hair effectively, taking into consideration the somewhat unforgiving er, ‘qualities’ of Bali water.

Well ladies, lament no longer. Body Temple Hair, located on The Canggu Club’s spa level, has officially opened and their internationally trained, professional stylist Hayley is ‘da bomb!

Originally from Sydney, Hayley spent no less than fourteen years training then working with Joh Bailey in his Double Bay and Bondi salons. Her expertise has afforded her the opportunity to rub shoulders with the rich and famous as a stylist for such television shows as Australia’s Next Top Model, Project Runway, The Biggest Loser, X Factor and more! She has directed runway shows for MS couture at the Mercedes Benz Fashion Week, worked as a stylist for shows by Alex Perry, Talulah and Jason Brunsden to name a few and even been personal stylist to musicians from the likes of Rudimental and Father John Misty. Suffice to say, Hayley’s considerable experience over the past decade means there’s hardly a head of hair she can’t handle!

In addition to her sensational skills with the scissors, Hayley also specialises in session styling, wedding hair and colouring, especially for blondes. Being of fair hair hue herself, she is aware that blonde is a shade many a stylist in Bali struggles to master, minus that all too familiar tangerine tinge! She has an arsenal of the latest professional, salon quality products guaranteed to make the most of even the fussiest and feathery hair.

To celebrate their official opening, Body Temple Hair Salon is offering a Bondi Beachworthy blow dry for an affordable Rp300,000++ and to sweeten the deal, you will get one FREE blow dry with the purchase of every four. As with all other Body Temple Spa services, Canggu Club members receive an extra 20% discount off the list price.

In its continuing quest to offer a one stop beauty, wellness and relaxation destination for Canggu residents and visitors, the welcome addition of professional hair salon services means Body Temple Spa and Salon are most definitely heading in the right direction.
