Hooray for JSA and Holiday Fun!

20150326-canggunews-01

Okay, so it seems like I have only just taken down the Christmas tree and now Easter is upon us already! Do I hear a collective groan from time poor parents? That means another lot of school holidays and the dilemma of what to do with our precious ones, especially if our working day continues despite whether school is in or out! Not wanting my kidlets to turn into ipad hugging technology junkies for the duration of their vacation, I am turning to the Junior Sports Academy for the solution.

Week 1 of the JSA holiday camp program is already is full swing and children of all ages are enjoying action packed days filled with all sorts of indoor and outdoor activities. The JSA Easter holiday program runs for two weeks with a different focus for each week.

Week one is multisport week. Drop in for a day or sign up for the full five. This week covers a combination of activities, giving participants a taste of every sport; basketball, tennis, swimming, ten pin bowling, soccer, dance, AFL, trampolining, gymnastics and even varied events such as JSA olympics, Funtathlons and Aqua Olympics! As well as getting active and out there, the sessions develop new skills and team building techniques as children from all ages and backgrounds work together with newfound friends.

Don’t despair if you’ve missed most of week one, the second week of JSA Holiday Camps allows children to choose their favourite sport and enjoy some intensive skill training and development with a good dose of fun, mixing it up a little each day with an hour or so at Splash Waterpark, Bounce Trampoline Centre or Strike 10 Pin Bowling.

Supervised check in starts from 9am with daily sessions commencing at 9.30am and running through to 3pm. Participants are also provided with a morning tea snack and hearty lunch to keep energy levels high for the day’s action.

The program is flexible with the option for children to drop in and participate for a day or to come for the whole week. Prices are very competitive and the JSA offers a daily rate or a discounted weekly rate for the full five days. The program is also open to non members and each 5 day camp purchase means kids get the benefit of a 7 day child Bronze Canggu Club membership, Bounce socks and a JSA water bottle!

Operating within the grounds of the comfortingly secure environment of The Canggu Club, children are signed in at the commencement of the day and remain under the watchful eye of trained sports professionals until the end of the activities at 3pm, whereby they are released only into the care of parents and nominated guardians. Parents can relax with the knowledge that their precious cargo will be safe and actively engaged for the duration!

It’s a terrific and healthy alternative to entertaining your youngsters throughout the holidays and means less stress for parents faced with the often daunting duty of coming up with something exciting and new to do each day.

Learn to Swim With an Olympian!

Luisa Fastskin

Luisa Fastskin

Living in a paradise surrounded by water I have always maintained the importance of my children having strong swimming skills. Knowing just how to keep afloat is one thing but having the ability, stamina and knowhow to stay safe in our oceans (and pools) is vital. In the past I have found it sometimes difficult to convince my kids to continue swimming lessons, however since enrolling them in JSA swim classes at Canggu Club, bribery (come on parents we’ve all used it at some stage) has no longer been necessary. Well, who wouldn’t want to be coached by an Olympian!

From her first holiday to Bali over three years ago, Luisa Striani developed a love affair with the island and, after subsequent biannual treks back to Bali for longer each time, she decided to move here permanently in July 2014. “I love the culture, the food, the people, the way of life and the energy it gives you!”

From Montesarchio, a small city in the province of Benevento, Southern Italy, it was clear Luisa was to follow a career that kept her feet wet! Finishing school in 1996 she went on to hold a position on the Italian National Swim Team from 1997 to 2004, earning multiple bronze and silver medals in numerous world championships with a career highlight as finalist for Italy in the Sydney 2000 Olympics! She holds national records for freestyle and is ten times Italian champion for Freestyle and Butterfly.

Now as if that’s not enough in achievements or accolades, Luisa has also graduated from Naples University with first class honours in Motor Sciences, has been awarded “Cavaliere della Repubblica Italiana” from the Italian president (my Italian is hopeless but from what I can gather, it’s a very prestigious award!) and is an accredited senior coach with the Italian Swimming Federation. Judging from that long list of credentials I am pretty confident my kids are in safe and very qualified hands.

Fortuitously, several months ago, The Canggu Club was in the market for an internationally qualified coach and I would guarantee that Luisa more than fit the bill. She teaches swim classes from 3 month olds and school age through to adults and also offers one on one tuition for those wishing to hone their skills in the water. Her classes focus on developing the correct technique but for the kids there is also a need to add an element of play. “They can have fun while testing their aquatic expertise.” There’s never any shortage of willing participants in the pool.

Luisa enjoys teaching at The Canggu Club because it is a melting pot of nationalities. Despite the obvious obstacles language barriers can create, she feels she can transmit her love for the water and passion for swimming. “It’s like a universal language!” Judging from the fun my kids seem to be having in the pool, I’d say they are definitely feeling the love.

Just Like a Jolly Jumper

20150326-canggunews-03

Not all Bali houses boast door frames or anchor points conducive to hanging a Jolly Jumper, so if your little tots have a spring in their step and live to bounce then you might want to mosey on down to Canggu Club West this Monday morning.

Bali’s only Bounce centre has just introduced Mums and Bubs mornings every Monday at 10am. It’s the ideal opportunity to get out and about and meet other parents with bambinos of a similar age as well as incorporating some out of the ordinary exercise time into your young one’s daily routine. A great alternative to the usual mothers’ group morning coffee gatherings, Mums and Bubs encourages development of physical skills, teaches balance and coordination as well as using techniques to enhance skills in listening and observation.

Certainly not limited to Mums alone, Dads and other guardians are more than welcome to join in the fun with their special little ones. It’s safe and fully supervised and with no risk of sharp edges or hard surfaces to cause bumps or bruises, it’s the perfect playground! Teach your child ball play and bouncing with individual trampolines for each parent and child. Jump with your bubba and let them feel that flying sensation as you guide them and bounce together!

For just IDR 150,000, parent and child get to enjoy 1 hour of bouncing fun with guidance from Bounce centre’s fully trained staff. Once the hour is over and the little tackers are all tired out, make your way up to the air conditioned comfort of Strike Bar to relax with a coffee and cake for mum or dad and a baby cino and fruit skewer or muffin for bub. It’s all included in the session price!

Trampolining is a relatively new sports sensation that has recently taken the world by storm. It is energetic, safe and healthy exercise and terrific for development of gross motor skills and movement all within the confines of a soft and safe environment. Take some time out for yourself and your little one this coming Monday and join in the coolest mothers’ (and fathers’) group ever! Mums and Bubs at Bounce – better than a jolly jumper any day!
