[dropcap style=”book”]W[/dropcap]hat’s that? Haven’t got your tickets for Bali’s Biggest Melbourne Cup Lawn Party yet? I’d be galloping on in to the Canggu Club pronto before it’s too late! Over half of the tickets for the decadent champagne marquee have already sold and whispers about town indicate that they’ll be hot property to have on cup day! But don’t despair, some tables are still available as well as tickets for the cocktail area.
Seriously, with an entertainment line up the likes of local rocker Marina Sidik and her band New Energy as a precursor to legendary Noiseworks frontman Jon Stevens, who wouldn’t want to be part of the fun on cup day!
Talented singer songwriter Stevens has been belting out memorable ballads for over three decades now and yours truly will certainly be up front and centre to see this rock idol perform again. (Ahhh swoon……!) In addition to his Noiseworks days and a four year stint fronting another Aussie band INXS, the seasoned performer also embarked on a successful solo career some years ago and hasn’t missed a beat.
Word has it that lately the iconic Aussie rock legend has been warming up his vocal chords around Australia as he promotes his new solo album, ‘Woman’. Featured on The Morning Show on September 18th, Jon Stevens’ performance confirmed he continues to be a consummate entertainer and clearly a crowd favourite who’ll be sure to wow the punters at this year’s hot ticket event for Melbourne Cup.
Once you have sorted your snazzy race attire and secured your marquee table or tickets for the cocktail tent, be sure to arrive early on Cup Day so you don’t miss a moment of the fun. Gates open at 10am and there will be multiple television screens positioned throughout the Canggu Club, perfect for punters eager to make the most of all of the Spring Racing Carnival action with three hours of free flow commencing from 11am.
Fashions on the field, prizes for best dressed and a bounty of raffles throughout the day will ensure that the party continues long after Aussie racing’s main event is done and dusted. Champagne marquee members will enjoy canapés followed by a sumptuous three course feast, and of course fabulous French bubbles! Cocktail tent ticket holders can partake in a slightly less formal affair of Chandon, icy cold beers and Babich wines as they munch on canapés on arrival. This lavish lawn party is THE place to be on Tuesday November 3 and the entertainment continues through until 8pm.

Bounce Brings Smiles to the Faces of Kesayan Ikang Papa Orphans
[dropcap style=”book”]S[/dropcap]adly, as is the case for many countries without adequate government funding gazetted to support the mentally and physically challenged, many families in Bali struggle to care for their handicapped youngsters. Despite the numerous orphanages scattered across the island, some are inefficiently run and only a few have the facilities and carers to cope with the numerous children facing these daily challenges.
Built in 1986 by the Gianyar government in connection with a school for disabled children and at the behest of the wife of the Regent, Panti Asuhan Kesayan Ikang Papa (which simply translates to orphan house passionate for the poor) was created as a home for poor and disabled orphans. Located on Jalan Kebo Iwa in Gianyar, the orphanage is home to just under 30 kids, 23 of whom are deaf and mute and 5 mentally handicapped, with a further 30 students attending the school on a daily basis.
Each month, as a part of Canggu Club’s commitment to supporting the less fortunate children of Bali and in an effort to provide a day out with a difference where the children could enjoy activities to stimulate the senses, the kids of Kesayan Ikang Papa were invited to an afternoon at Cubby House Kids Club, Bounce and Strike Bowling.
21 of the orphanage’s charges, ranging from ages 6 to 15 years attended the afternoon and their excitement was evident in the smiles on their dials! From afternoon tea at Cubby House, the children were keen to go off and try their hand on the trampolines at Bounce and smash down some pins at Strike Bowling. Despite their different disabilities, communication between the kids was clear as they laughed and joked cheekily.
After an afternoon of activity and some refreshments, the children and their carers came together again to accept donations of much needed supplies of shoes, clothes, linen and toiletries made possible through the generosity of some Canggu Club members. Though there is a small amount of funding from the government each year, the orphanage survives largely on private donations from the parents of the day students at the school as well as some annual funding from orphanage sponsors, Amandari. Despite this, supplies are always needed and greatly appreciated. Kesayan Ikang Papa also offers a scholarship program that enables you to support an orphan at the school. Although education is free in Indonesia, many costs are still incurred for living, transportation, books, uniforms and various other necessities. Along with providing a nurturing and nourishing environment for the kids, the orphanage also aims to furnish the children with a few skills they may be able to use once they leave school. Sponsorships giving children the opportunity to learn painting and dance can also be arranged through contacting the centre.
