Christmas Shopping & Summer Fun All Rolled into One

20151202-blog-shopping

You may not yet hear the jingling of sleigh bells but let me tell you, Christmas is just around the corner, holiday time is hotting up and it’s your chance to get sorted for the silly season. The end of term is fast approaching and as always, the Junior Sports Academy and The Canggu Club  have organised a fantastic afternoon to celebrate the end of another successful and sporty season along with the start of school holidays.  Yippee!

Friday December 18th will feature an afternoon of entertainment with the JSA presentation and performance party in conjunction with yuletide celebrations, carols to sing along to and the very popular Christmas Market Bazaar. Believe me, if last term’s market was anything to go by, I’ll be able to knock over all of my Christmas shopping in one fell swoop! There’s rumoured to be some extra tasty treats also available in time for the festive season. Now that’s my kind of retail therapy!

The market will kick off from midday and guests can browse through the stalls in the shaded comfort of the marquee. There will be presentations from all of the Junior Academy sports in the cooler part of the afternoon, with an opportunity for parental participation and a chance for Mum and Dad to join in the fun and show the kids what they’re made of.

Finish the term in the style of summer with a BBQ dinner and a sing along with friends as you get into the spirit of the season with some Christmas carols. Word has it The Canggu Club’s home grown talent might even provide some musical musings as part of the evening’s entertainment line up. The kids can then recline into a bean bag and conclude the evening with a Christmas movie on the big screen.

School days done and dusted for December and Christmas days off a distant memory,  many parents will be wondering how to entertain their cherubs for the remainder of the holidays (not all of us have the luxury of a month long vacation!) Luckily, JSA’s  holiday camps commence from January 4th and January 11th. As usual, kids can enrol for the entire week’s activities or simply drop in for a day at a time. Holiday camps run each day from 9am until 3pm. Participants are engaged in a variety of sports and leisure activities throughout the day under the constant supervision of a team of talented and fully qualified sporting professionals. A nutritious lunch and morning and afternoon snacks are also included in the price.

This holiday season’s line up of activities will include the usual sporting suspects such as soccer, swimming, gymnastics, basketball, dance, tennis, trampolining and AFL along with two new sports, netball and tag rugby! Not just a day of sports, JSA holiday programs also encourage skill development, team building and good ol’ fashioned fun. Children get the opportunity to try their luck at ten pin bowling or ride the slides to enjoy some relief from the summer heat.

But don’t panic if your pint sized family members aren’t that keen on sports. Cubby House Kids’ Club is also offering a holiday program for 3 to 12 year olds throughout December and January for crafty kids! For just IDR 200,000 ++ per four hour session (you can choose from 9am – 1pmor 1pm – 5pm), your children will be thoroughly entertained with a series of awesome arts and crafts sessions.

December’s program runs from the 7th until Christmas Eve and includes such activities as Christmas decoration, tree and card making, creating gifts for friends and family and designing dream catchers. Sessions will be back in full swing in the New Year from January 4th with a program bursting at the seams with fun stuff like magic sand craft, jewellery making, kite design and even a dance contest. Session prices include a meal and a drink and the kids get to take home the fruits of their labour!

For full details regarding pricing and holiday camp schedules, simply check out the Junior Sports Academy website:  jsabali.com . If you are not already familiar with JSA’s sporting programs or vacation camps, the end of term presentation and market day at the Canggu Club onDecember 18th is a terrific opportunity to see the Academy in action. Don’t forget to pack your purse to take advantage of some pre Christmas bargains at the bazaar!

Fundraiser to Help Fight the Fires

CANGGUNEWS-20151104-funraiser

We love our blue skies here in Bali. Sure, we have a little whinge now and again when we endure an afternoon of haze from a rice paddy burn off or the neighbour decides to dispose of his household rubbish by setting a match to it, but imagine a place where the air is clogged with toxic smoke on a daily basis. Think of what it would be like to wake up to a sky so dark with noxious fumes and haze so thick that every breath becomes laboured.

The people of Palangkaraya in Central Kalimantan have been living this nightmare for over two months now as peat fires burn out of control across Indonesia and the air quality in this region is so poor the area has  been declared one of the most polluted places on the planet! The death toll is rising and over half a million people are  being treated for respiratory illnesses associated with the toxic smoke. Supplies of effective masks are limited and what is available is costly. In addition to the toll on the human population, the fires are posing serious threat to the world’s largest orang-utan population as well as numerous other species which call the area home.

The fires are nothing new and for decades farmers have been clearing away forest to make way for large plantations to produce commodities such as palm oil, a widely used ingredient in cosmetics and processed foods. Every year the smoke from the fires becomes an issue with pollution spreading across Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore, but this year they are out of control with carbon pollutant levels sometimes exceeding daily emissions for the USA!

These peat fires are difficult to extinguish at the best of times as the soil in these areas is incredibly carbon rich from thousands of years of accumulated organic material and the fires burn deep under ground. Unfortunately, with water levels low from an extended dry season and resources and manpower to fight the flames at a bare minimum, the fires are likely to continue burning until the area experiences some prolonged, heavy rainfall. In September there were more than twelve thousand hotspots in Central Kalimantan alone!

Despite current fundraising efforts and attempts to raise awareness about the issue (sadly the focus from international media seems to be waning!!) much more needs to be done to help firefighters  bring the hotspots under control as well as provision of effective anti pollution masks for those living in the affected areas.

In the wake of their hugely successful fundraiser for the victims of the Nepal Earthquake, The Canggu Club is holding an appeal evening on Wednesday November 11th in an effort to build awareness about this eco-disaster and to raise money to assist in the fight to stop the fires. The evening is scheduled to start from 5pm with live music, raffles and a BBQ. The team from Outrop (Orangutan Tropical Peatland Project) will be there to answer any questions and The Club will also screen the Channel News Asia – Get Real Documentary “Heart of the Haze” . The film highlights the severity of the situation in Central Kalimantan, following the local firefighters in their battle against the blaze and presenting an eyeopening outline of the plight of the people in Palangkaraya.

The event is free to Canggu Club members and just IDR50,000 for non-members. All proceeds from the evening will go towards the purchase of much needed N95 masks, along with vital safety equipment for the local firefighters.

Despite it’s disappearance from most international media, it is vital that people understand the extent of this ecological disaster. While we may not necessarily be feeling the immediate effects of the burn here in Bali, it is imperative that we assist in raising awareness and funds to help. After all, our skies in Bali may be blue for now, but what would it be like here if the winds do change……?

Hats off to The Canggu Club for Bali’s Best Melbourne Cup Party!

CANGGUNEWS-20151104-melcup

Wowsers what a fabulous day! Last Tuesday’s sensational lawn party proved once again The Canggu Club is the premier place to be to celebrate Australia’s richest event on the racing calendar – The Melbourne Cup.

From 10am, fresh faced fillies and gallantly attired gents filed through the gates and into a Spring racing spectacular that made punters feel like they were at Flemington. Floral arrangements sat atop crisp white tablecloths in elegantly decorated marquees that flanked the stage while a common area between the tents meant that everyone could mix and mingle close to the action. The champagne was flowing and the beer was cold as punters jostled to pick a winner in the sweepstakes or pose for a picture in front of the flower wall – a stunning new addition to this year’s set up.

Really, the race itself is only a small part of the day, although I was stoked to witness the moment that little lady lead her steed over the line to make Melbourne Cup history. I guess it didn’t hurt that I picked first place in the sweepstakes either (winner, winner chicken dinner!) The race might be over but the party was well and truly under full steam with Marina Sidik and her band, New Energy belting out some seriously rocking sounds. This girl can sing! Some guests just couldn’t resist the urge to get up and groove while others took the time to relax and cool down in the marquees as lunch was served.

Fashions on the Field proved impossible to pick this year and judges could not narrow down the field of finalists to less than eleven as gorgeous compere Jodie Brittain guided the lasses and lads out onto the podium to garner crowd support. Tara Lee took out the prize for the fillies with Aryna Bevan a very close runner-up, while  a very dapper Jason Baumber grabbed the guernsey for the guys followed by Gus Simpson in second place. Guests outdid themselves in the style stakes and elegance was the order of the day with printed silks, sleek suits and stunning fascinators stealing the show.

Drinks continued to flow as the sun sank a little lower and onto the stage sauntered the guy we were all waiting to see. There was barely a bottom left on a bar stool once Jon Stevens took to the mic and led us on a rock and roll journey through the nineties and ‘noughties’ with a repertoire of songs from his Noiseworks and INXS days along with some fantastic new material from his new album – ‘Woman’ . The heat of the afternoon was long forgotten as stilettos were strewn aside and revellers rocked into the evening.

Melbourne Cup day at The Canggu Club had something for everyone with raffles  throughout the day raising serious coin for local charity Solemen Indonesia and there weren’t too many tables without a Solemen teddy bear or two as their mascot.

As is the case with every race day, stories abound but there is just one tale too sweet not to mention! I had the pleasure of meeting an Australian couple who made the journey back to Melbourne Cup at The Canggu Club to celebrate the time and place where they met the year before. Lynda and Nic crossed paths at last year’s lawn party and despite living in different states, their romance has blossomed and he plans to move South this month to be closer to her. From the looks of these two, Lady Luck and Cupid were both winners on that day!

Tables cleared and bottles empty, Bali’s Biggest Lawn Party was over for another year, but congratulations and sincere gratitude must go towards the many staff at The Canggu Club who worked tirelessly to ensure guests enjoyed another sensational day. From food and beverage staff, to front of house, security, organisers, planners and management; thank you! You really outdid yourselves.

To check out the photos and fun from the day, be sure to go online at: cangguclub.com and click on the gallery for all of the famous (and infamous) faces from this year’s Melbourne Cup Lawn Party. You never know who you might find!

Hellishly Good Fun @ CCS Halloween Party!

CANGGUNEWS-20151104-hallowen

Record crowds and happy faces generally indicate event organisers have pretty much nailed it when it comes to any kind of function and last month’s Canggu Community School Halloween Party was definitely no exception. Hordes of excited ghouls, ghosts and groups in ghastly get ups streamed onto the field at The Canggu Club, which was transformed for the evening’s event…. and that was just the grown ups!

The excitement among the hundreds of kids and their parents was palpable as the masses made their way toward the madness. There was everything a kid (and kids-at-heart) could want from a Halloween party with freaky tunes, jumping castles and a giant blow up slide, face painting, games, lucky dips, raffles and competitions for best dressed. You could even get a lesson from the mad professor at the spooky science lab, or take your chances on a stroll through the haunted house!

Teachers and the tireless volunteers from FOCCS (Friends of Canggu Community School) spent hours on the day preparing the field with stalls, decorations and attractions, the success of the event bearing testament to the weeks of planning and preparation that must go into an evening such as this. What’s also important to note is that these school community events are only made possible due to the generosity of donations from businesses in the community as well as the donation of massive amounts of man hours from the volunteers and committee members involved.

The Canggu Club field proved to be the perfect venue for this huge party, providing room to move and space to play, with sustenance easy to find from the food and beverage stands set up by The Canggu Club especially for the event. Tables were chock to the brim with diners and the field was scattered with family groups making the most of the balmy picnic atmosphere. Many more were lined up to take advantage of the delicious fare on offer.  Prices were kept to a minimum so punters could spend their rupiah at the many Halloween stalls offering up ghoulish gifts and freakish finds. All proceeds from the event will go towards the FOCCS fund which supports the school, the community, charitable organisations and promotions. If you are keen to learn more about the fund, information is always available by contacting foccs@ccsbali.com.

Once again, the desire to dress up reigned supreme and kids appeared in crazy costumes ranging from kooky clowns, zombies, witches, spectres, scary dolls and crazy cheerleaders. There was even some nutty old chic with a nail through her head and in serious need of some dental work…..(no idea who that could have been….)

All in all, fun was the order of the evening and you were flat out finding a frown in the sea of smiles and made up faces, the secure venue making for a worry free night for families, where youngsters could run free without fear for their safety.

Organised every year by FOCCS in conjunction with The Canggu Club, sincere thanks must go this rather amazing group of special people who continue to give selflessly of their time and efforts in order for the rest of us to enjoy such a fabulous evening. If you are a parent at The Canggu Community School and would like to volunteer to help out with the next FOCCS event, please email them on: foccs@ccsbali.com

Rockin’ Good Entertainment Line up for Cup Day

Rockin’ Good Entertainment Line up for Cup Day

20151009-jon[dropcap style=”book”]W[/dropcap]hat’s that? Haven’t got your tickets for Bali’s Biggest Melbourne Cup Lawn Party yet? I’d be galloping on in to the Canggu Club pronto before it’s too late! Over half of the tickets for the decadent champagne marquee have already sold and whispers about town indicate that they’ll be hot property to have on cup day! But don’t despair, some tables are still available as well as tickets for the cocktail area.

Seriously, with an entertainment line up the likes of local rocker Marina Sidik and her band New Energy as a precursor to legendary Noiseworks frontman Jon Stevens, who wouldn’t want to be  part of the fun on cup day!

Talented singer songwriter Stevens has been belting out memorable ballads for over three decades now and yours truly will certainly be up front and centre to see this rock idol perform again. (Ahhh swoon……!) In addition to his Noiseworks days and a four year stint fronting another Aussie band INXS, the seasoned performer also embarked on a successful solo career some years ago and hasn’t missed a beat.

Word has it that lately the iconic Aussie rock legend has been warming up his vocal chords around Australia as he promotes his new solo album, ‘Woman’. Featured on The Morning Show on September 18th, Jon Stevens’ performance confirmed he continues to be a consummate entertainer and clearly a crowd favourite who’ll be sure to wow the punters at this year’s hot ticket event for  Melbourne Cup.

Once you have sorted your snazzy race attire and secured your marquee table or tickets for the cocktail tent, be sure to arrive early on Cup Day so you don’t miss a moment of the fun. Gates open at 10am and there will be multiple television screens positioned throughout the Canggu Club, perfect for punters eager to make the most of all of the Spring Racing Carnival action with three hours of free flow commencing from 11am.

Fashions on the field, prizes for best dressed and a bounty of raffles throughout the day will ensure that the party continues long after  Aussie racing’s main event is done and dusted. Champagne marquee members will enjoy canapés followed by a sumptuous three course feast, and of course fabulous French bubbles! Cocktail tent ticket holders can partake in a slightly less formal affair of Chandon, icy cold beers and Babich wines as they munch on canapés on arrival. This lavish lawn party is THE place to be on Tuesday November 3 and the entertainment continues through until 8pm.

Despite the fact that the discounted early bird tickets have sold out, there are still some tickets available for the cocktail area and the marquee and Canggu Club Gold and Platinum card holders can also take advantage of the members’ discount by emailing res@cangguclub.com or by booking in person at Canggu Club Reception. Bounce Brings Smiles to the Faces of Kesayan Ikang Papa Orphans

20151009-Orphanage-visit

[dropcap style=”book”]S[/dropcap]adly, as is the case for many countries without adequate government funding gazetted to support the mentally and physically challenged, many families in Bali struggle to care for their handicapped youngsters. Despite the numerous orphanages scattered across the island, some are inefficiently run and only a few have the facilities and carers to cope with the numerous children facing these daily challenges.

Built in 1986 by the Gianyar government in connection with a school for disabled children and at the behest of the wife of the Regent, Panti Asuhan Kesayan Ikang Papa (which simply translates to orphan house passionate for the poor) was created as a home for poor and disabled orphans. Located on Jalan Kebo Iwa in Gianyar, the orphanage is home to just under 30 kids, 23 of whom are deaf and mute and 5 mentally handicapped, with a further 30 students attending the school on a daily basis.

Each month, as a part of Canggu Club’s commitment to supporting the less fortunate children of Bali and in an effort to provide a day out with a difference where the children could enjoy activities to stimulate the senses, the kids of Kesayan Ikang Papa were invited to an afternoon at Cubby House Kids Club, Bounce and Strike Bowling.

21 of the orphanage’s charges, ranging from ages 6 to 15 years attended the afternoon and their excitement was evident in the smiles on their dials! From afternoon tea at Cubby House, the children were keen to go off and try their hand on  the trampolines at Bounce and smash down some pins at Strike Bowling. Despite their different disabilities, communication between the kids was clear as they laughed and joked cheekily.

After an afternoon of activity and some refreshments, the children and their carers came together again to accept donations of much needed supplies of shoes, clothes, linen and toiletries made possible through the generosity of some Canggu Club members. Though there is a small amount of funding from the government each year, the orphanage survives largely on private donations from the parents of the day students at the school as well as some annual funding from orphanage sponsors, Amandari. Despite this, supplies are always needed and greatly appreciated. Should you wish to make a donation to Kesayan Ikang Papa, please contact the Canggu Club or for more information about their VIP program http://www.cubbyhousekidsclub.com/vip-program-canggu

Kesayan Ikang Papa also offers a scholarship program that enables you to support an orphan at the school. Although education is free in Indonesia, many costs are still incurred for living, transportation, books, uniforms and various other necessities. Along with providing a nurturing and nourishing environment for the kids, the orphanage also aims to furnish the children with a few skills they may be able to use once they leave school. Sponsorships giving children the opportunity to learn painting and dance can also be arranged through contacting the centre.

Super Slide Action @ Splash’s Big 1st Birthday Bash!

20150930-canggunews-splash-waterpark

Can you believe it? Canggu Club’s newest waterpark is already one year old and they are inviting everyone along to celebrate with Splash’s Big Birthday Bash! For twelve months now, Big Red, Speed Racer and Super Bowl have been entertaining the crowds at Canggu’s very own avenue for aquatic fun.

But it’s not just your run of the mill birthday party either. The party plans for Friday October 2nd will also include the Junior Sports Academy end of term break up as well as a market bazaar!

Celebrations kick off from midday with the pool party from noon. Once the kids are happily ensconced on the slides parents can enjoy some relaxed retail therapy and browse the bounty of goodies on offer at the market bazaar from 12pm. Choose from a selection of reasonably priced swimwear, homewares, toys, clothing, shoes, sarong towels, totes, leather goods and lots more from the vast variety of stalls in attendance. With so many locally produced and quality items on offer,  ou’ll be unlikely to leave empty handed! Vendor registration is open to everyone and Canggu Club Silver, Gold and Platinum members also enjoyed the added bonus of registering their stall free of charge!

Coinciding with the end of the Canggu Community School term, cool tunes and entertainment on the day will commence from 2pm with the Junior Sports Academy’s play, performance and presentation from 3pm. It’s that time of the term when your youngsters get the opportunity to showcase the skills and sporting prowess they have honed over the previous weeks and parents can be a part of the afternoon.  Activities will include soccer games and a gymnastics presentation. Parents and siblings of JSA participants who are not members of the Canggu Club can join in the action from 3pm by taking advantage of the half price day pass rate! Of course as usual, entry to the party for Canggu Club members is free.

But the excitement doesn’t stop there. The famous foam party is back from 5pm and anyone who has experienced the fun of the foam at previous parties will confirm it’s loads of laughs, safe and seriously sudsy! All soap aside, kids and the young at heart can round off a terrific evening with some popcorn and movie time at Starlight Movies from 7pm.

As always, Canggu Club will offer a variety of options for healthy snacks at their numerous food and beverage outlets, or take advantage of the kids being actively engaged at the movies and stay for dinner and a refreshing drink. There is always the added bonus  of extra adrenalin filled Fridaynight action with Mini Mania, Bounce Mania and Bounce After Dark just across the road!

So it looks like the Splash First Birthday Bash at The Canggu Club will be where the party is at on Friday October 2nd. Local Favourite Takes On Canggu Tennis Top Spot

Local Favourite Takes On Canggu Tennis Top Spot

20150910-nining

There’s a new queen of the court and she is here to stay! Those of us who frequent the Canggu Club Tennis Centre will already be familiar with new Tennis Club Coordinator, Nining’s face as she has assisted many of us with our swing for some years now!
A veteran on the Indonesian tennis circuit, Nining (Sediati Merdiningsih) began playing the game at the tender age of nine and started competition from just ten years of age! A year later saw a move to Jakarta after her talent was scouted by local tennis club, Nugra Santana who offered her a coveted sponsorship.

At the age of twelve she had risen to an incredible number one ranking for junior female in Indonesia and continued to participate and succeed in numerous tournaments, winning an impressive twelve in just one year! From age 13 – 17 years, Nining played the Asian circuit, including a three month tennis tour of the United States.

Her move to Bali a few years later saw her secure certification in teaching and between instruction and participating in tournaments around the island, she also coached the local Bali team to the number three position nationally!

Already having been a firm fixture with Canggu Club Tennis for around eight years now, Nining knows the run of these courts like, well…….. her back hand! Her friendly manner and tennis talents puts her in high demand as a coach and hitting partner, with many of us hoping her numerous skills on the court might rub off. It was no surprise she was the obvious choice to fill previous Head of Canggu Club Tennis, Paul McCabe’s rather large shoes after he moved on to other ventures last month.

Nining’s familiarity with the day to day operations of the Tennis Club, her obvious popularity with members and guests, young and old as well as her talents as a player, hitting partner and coach, made her the ideal candidate for Canggu Tennis Club Coordinator. Along with her task of organising other coaches and assistants, she also takes on the massive role of maintaining the smooth operation of the hugely popular Junior Sports Academy tennis program.

We wish this popular and talented local lady every success in her new position and look forward to yet another busy and exciting year of tennis and the Canggu Club Tennis Centre. Congratulations Nining!

Vampire Facials at Monday Morning Beauty Talks

20150910-vampire

Being on the wrong side of forty, a lover of the sun and a little bit vain, I have long been on the lookout for ways to return some of that youthful glow to my face and replenish what gravity and the years have taken away!

Having never been wildly enthusiastic about the thought of injecting foreign filler matter into my rapidly sagging jowls, surprisingly, the idea of PRP therapy did pique my curiosity. Billed as the “Vampire Facial” and apparently made famous by one of those Kardashian sisters, Body Temple Spa and Cocoon Medical showcased a demo of the procedure for their monthly Monday morning Beauty Talks, so I went along for a look.

PRP (or platelet rich plasma) therapy is not a new procedure. It has long been employed in orthopaedics as a treatment to promote rapid healing and replenish tissue growth in knee and shoulder injuries and, only recently as an anti ageing procedure. Not surprisingly, it is the most popular procedure at Cocoon Medical Spa after botox!

PRP therapy is a process whereby qualified therapists draw around 40ml of your blood (yes there are needles), place it in a centrifuge and spin it madly for about ten minutes in order to separate the platelet rich plasma from the other red bits. That 40 ml typically produces just 10 ml of the ‘good stuff’ which is then injected (more needles!!) into the areas of the face you wish to rejuvenate. Designed to promote healing, production of hyaluronic acid and collagen growth, it is really the only safe stuff to inject in those problem ‘under the eye’ areas where we all seem to carry a little extra unwanted luggage and where botox and fillers just can’t go! If you think about it, they are simply putting back the best of the bits they just took out! Easy!

In order to expedite the process and due to the fact that ‘we are talking injections here people!’, the team at Body Temple and Cocoon showcased a slightly different PRP procedure for our Monday Morning Beauty Talks. For the purposes of this demo and to allow us ladies to gather ‘round, devour complimentary munchies and watch our volunteer (should that read victim?) for the day, the therapists demonstrated a slightly less invasive way to reap the rewards of PRP therapy. In this instance, just 10 ml of blood was drawn and separated whilst our guinea pig enjoyed a microdermabrasion in preparation for what was to follow. The plasma extracted, a derma roller was used over the face to ‘perforate’ the skin, after which the plasma was gently massaged into the aerated tissue! Ewww! A little bit icky, this procedure is a slightly less daunting and invasive but still produces the similar results of cell rejuvenation and collagen growth, promoting fresh, plump, younger looking skin. Yippeee! Sign me up!

Every month Body Temple Spa @ The Canggu Club, along with Cocoon Medical Spa join forces to present free and informative information mornings to showcase therapies and provide info on all of those hints we need to know to stay beautiful inside and out. The mornings are open to everyone and you do not need to be a Canggu Club member to join in. Morning tea and refreshments are provided and participants have the chance to win a complimentary treatment showcased at the session!

Canggu Club Play Host to AJFC for 2nd Year Running

Throughout the world, football is something that seems to matter, a lot, to many people! You merely have to watch a match on TV, go to a game or simply stroll along the beach of a Sunday to witness the emotion, loyalty and excitement it evokes from those who live for the game.

Allianz understands this and as such, has been an avid supporter of football for many years, recognising the passion they see that comes from the sport. It was with this in mind (along with their Platinum Partnership with the Munich Football Club) when they created the Allianz Junior Football Camp in 2009 to develop ‘football youth engagement’.

After several successful years along with the massive growth in popularity of football among youth across Asia, Allianz commenced an Asian Football Camp in 2013 to provide an opportunity for more teens from ages 14 to 16 years to have the chance to participate. Now in its third year, Canggu Club recently hosted the Allianz Junior Football Camp for the second time from July 28th – 31st.

32 teens hailing from Indonesia, Taiwan, Malaysia, South Korea and Thailand were scouted and selected from thousands of hopefuls across Asia for the opportunity to participate in the three day camp led by Munich Football Club coach, Timon Pauls.
After a successful camp at Canggu Club in 2014, organisers were more than happy to return this year to take advantage of the facilities, quality training support staff and securely fenced and manicured Sports Field Canggu Club has to offer. It was the ideal location to host their three day intensive football clinic.

On the first day of their football adventure the talented teens, many of whom were experiencing their first overseas adventure, enjoyed some introductory exercises on the beach, getting to know their team members from various countries as well as a welcome dinner. Day two and three involved some intensive skills and game training at Canggu Club along with an opportunity to enjoy Bali’s diverse culture and stunning geography with a visit to local temples and the beach! On the final day, prizes were awarded to the winning team of the tournament from the day before as well as the exciting opportunity to be selected as a wild card winner for a place at the Allianz Junior Football Camp in Munich, held from August 13th – 18th.

A coveted spot in the Munich Camp afforded team members the opportunity to train with Munich Football Club, meet the soccer stars in person as well as a behind the scenes tour of the of the club and the Allianz Arena and of course, a six day trip to Germany!

Camps such as the one in Munich and the Asian Junior Football Camp held at Canggu Club serve not only to inspire and develop sporting talents but also provide a glimpse into the professional world of football. For information and details about how to apply for the Allianz Junior Football Camp for 2016, check the Allianz website as they post the selection process around April – May for the camp in Bali in July.

Sign Up Now for Term 1 Fun

It’s that time of year again when uniforms are dragged out of the cupboards and dusted off as we get organised for the new school year. Schedules are organised along with making decisions about sports and activities for the term ahead. It is also an ideal time to enrol the kids in the Junior Sports Academy’s (JSA) Term 1 program before places are quickly snapped up!

With so many different indoor and outdoor activities on offer, and in an effort to aid in the task of choosing the one best suited to your budding young sports stars, the JSA recently held their open day at Canggu Club on Saturday August 3rd.

The day commenced from 3pm with free entry to Canggu Club for the afternoon! Along with games, activities and prizes, it was the perfect opportunity for regular JSA devotees as well as newcomers to sign up for their favourite activities prior to the start of the season, in order to secure their places for Term 1.

CANGGUNEWS-20150824-03

Due to the continuous increase in popularity and interest in the program, available places for last term’s JSA activities filled quickly. Signing up at this year’s open day was a great way to ensure eight weeks of fun, fitness, sports and skill development with the Junior Sports Academy with participants benefiting from the expertise of highly experienced international coaches, professional athletes and even ex Olympians!

Saturday’s open day also afforded budding Junior Sports Academians and their families the opportunity to speak with coaches and staff on a one to one basis, enabling them to gain full insight into what this term’s program has to offer.  Canggu Club included a major draw card to sweeten the deal for prospective JSA members, with every enrolment on the day going into the draw to win a Starlight Movies VIP Package! The prize allowing the winner to enjoy star treatment for an evening with a Starlight Movie of their choice, VIP seating area for the winner and five of their friends along with ice cream, cool drinks and pop corn during the show! Clearly a popular incentive judging from the number of eager enrolees and you could barely wipe the smile from prize winner, Connor Smith’s face as he collected his prize!

As always, the Junior Sports Academy continues to offer programs across a variety of sports including Soccer, AFL, Tennis, Swimming, Dance, Gymnastics, Basketball and Trampolining. Coaches are experienced and fully accredited and each sport provides for skill development across all age groups and abilities.

So, what’s new for the JSA term ahead? For the first time, the Term 1 program now offers Auskick across two afternoons a week on Mondays and Thursdays. Non-member parents and guardians who wish to enjoy Canggu Club facilities whilst their children are participating in JSA activities can do so for a minimal entrance fee of just Rp120,000 and JSA members can now bring parents, guardians and siblings (up to 9 persons per accompanying JSA member) into the Canggu Club for only half of the normal day pass rate from 3pm Monday to Friday! A Play Performance & Presentation afternoon is also scheduled for October 1st for JSA students to showcase their newfound skills to family and friends in the comfortable grounds and surrounds of Canggu Club.

All in all, Term 1 is shaping up to be a stellar eight weeks of activities. Don’t miss the chance for your child to be a part of it – sign up now by contacting the Junior Sports Academy on:

CCS, BCF & Canggu Club – Cause We Care

CCS-BCF-CC_Cause-we-care

In an effort to assist in providing some much needed fun and recreational activities for those less fortunate than themselves, 3 inspiring young Canggu Community School students, Dinah Mous, Jesse SjiewOen and An Nisa, initiated a tennis clinic at the Canggu Club on Thursday May 28 during the week long Canggu Classic Tennis Tournament. They invited 21 children aged 10 – 12 years from the Bali Children Foundation (BCF), one of Bali’s major yayasan (charity). Most of this foundation’s work is centred in the North and North West of the island, with all of the children coming from poor and disadvantaged families.

Upon their arrival to the Canggu Club, the excited children were introduced to the coaches (Paul McCabe and Komang) and the three students from CCS. They were given the opportunity to not only learn the basics of tennis but to foster bonds of friendship with some of the other children from different areas of North Bali.

After a productive tennis clinic, the children were treated to a complimentary Bounce Trampolining session: a chance for them to release some tensions in the form of fun and physical activity. Before their departure and return to the North of Bali, they enjoyed a traditional Indonesian buffet kindly prepared by the Indonesian chef at Canggu Club’s Strike Bowling Bar.

Founded in 2003 by local businesswoman Margaret Barry, BCF has over 1000 children on scholarships in the area from Singaraja in the East to Melaya in the West. Most of the children sponsored hail from the areas around Lovina and Banjar.

The BCF works from village to village. After selecting a village with numerous disadvantaged families, local Balinese staff members work with the village leadership (Kepala Desa and Kelians of each Banjar) to introduce these families to BCF and outline the opportunities the scholarships provide.

One of the major components of BCF’s success is their “after school” classes. Each child receives lessons in English language (with the emphasis on spoken English). The older children receive computer lessons in specially set up school rooms with fourteen computers. Teachers for these lessons are provided by BCF. These children also attend clubs which promote the art of Balinese singing and dancing, marital arts (silat), and are run by the older children.

For more than 12 years Bali Children Foundation have worked hard to achieve their aims, and their efforts have paid off. In the 2013-14 school year they had a zero dropout rate at elementary school, with many of these students continuing all the way through to year 12!

But the number of children who still need their help is huge with approximately 20,000 children who will leave school without reaching senior high. Sponsorships are available for Rp2 million a year for elementary school children to Rp4 million a year for a Senior High School student. You can email BCF on info@balichildrenfoundation.org or phone their office in Banjar on +62 811 398 733.

Canggu Club plans to continue contact with BCF through their commitment to helping local community and their ‘Cause We Care’ campaign and sincerely looks forward to working with them again in the future.

Dance Like There’s Nobody Watching!

Dance-Like-Theres-Nobody-Watching!

Memories of dance classes in my younger years were not necessarily fond. My taskmaster (and that’s putting it mildly) Ms Gilchrist would stand at the front of the studio, stamping her cane, ‘tut tutting’ at my elephant footed frolicking and not so politely enquiring as to whether I had eaten a football for lunch!! Not my favourite person.

Thankfully The Junior Sports Academy dance program bears no resemblance to my surprisingly brief ballet experiences and youthful and energetic instructor, Hanna Lehtovaara is luckily nothing like the grumpy Madame Gilchrist, promising far more entertainment, variety and fitness focused fun.

Three different classes are aimed at various age groups in order to foster peer group friendships and sustain achievable skill levels across the board, building confidence and self-esteem. The main focus across all age groups is to get kids moving and having a great time.

Dance and Move is for younger boys and girls, targeting ages 3 1/2 to 5 1/2 years. This is where the fun begins! Building confidence is the key as kids find enjoyment in learning some basic moves.Dance Fit &Fun for 6 – 8 years makes it easier for new as well as more experienced dancers to enjoy routines that are scaled to ability. Each class encompassing simple athletic dance moves and choreography.

Dance Fit Max for 9 year olds and over is so much fun it’s like a dance party every week! Students progress through dance moves and the latest in pre-choreographed routines set to top 40 hits, all the while building stamina, coordination and fitness.
Big kids who like to bust a move don’t miss out either as Hanna takes Zumba classes on Tuesdays at 10am. No experience necessary, just be prepared to move, laugh, sweat and enjoy!

As a fitness instructor, Hanna believes that teaching dance for kids is more about dancing to keep fit rather than structuring a course to focus solely on any one particular dance discipline or style. A variety of genres are touched on from classical to hip hop, allowing students to experience a broad spectrum of moves and routines, widening their appreciation of dance as a whole.
Classes are held in the exercise studios at the Canggu Club Fitness Centre. The JSA dance schedule for kids operates on Mondays and Wednesdays with classes commencing from 3pm for the juniors and are 45 minutes duration.

Her considerable experience teaching different types of dance, limitless energy and positive attitude makes Hanna a clear favourite among the children. She has reshaped the JSA dance program to make it more accessible, entertaining and engaging.
The new term for Junior Sports Academy tuition commences from the week beginning Monday August 10th. For further information about dance classes or to check out the schedule, please contact:

An Afternoon for Every Kid @ Cubby House Kids Club

20150702-FullSizeRender

There are occasions at times in life where we are afforded the privilege of meeting some truly selfless people achieving seriously wonderful things. Some weeks ago I had the good fortune to be a part of such an enriching experience at The Cubby House Kids Club in Canggu.

Having long been an avid supporter of Solemen Indonesia and their incredible humanitarian efforts throughout the community, The Canggu Club was more than happy to open the doors of their Kids’ Club to a group of amazing children and their carers and families for an afternoon of fun and games. Each month, as a part of their VIP program to support those less fortunate, Cubby House Kids’ Club invite a group of children to share some playtime, enjoy a meal and don their very own VIP T shirt!

Solemen and Cubby House staff along with a gaggle of caring volunteers assisted with logisitcs, bussing the children from numerous locations around Southern Bali such as Gianyar, Renon, Sanur and Denpasar. Many of the youngsters needing to be carried in by willing helpers as their conditions rendered them unable to walk or move unaided.

These children and their families and carers have come to the attention of Solemen because of their various illnesses, plights and conditions and they are providing much appreciated assistance in an effort to help them experience a better life, much needed health care and support and aid for their families.

Their ages range from 6 months to 22 years of age and they are afflicted by such conditions including cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, down syndrome, harlequins ichytosis and heart conditions, to name a few.

The afternoon involved the large group gathering at at The Cubby House, many taking advantage of the doll houses and numerous toys and games on offer while others, unable to stand, viewed the goings on from the comfort of their bean bags, a sparkle in their eyes and smiles on their faces conveying their enjoyment at simply being a part of the fun. Afternoon tea time rolled around and everyone enjoyed a feast the likes of nasi goreng, snacks and fresh fruit and juices.

The obvious love and care from an army of selfless volunteers from Solemen and the children’s family and friends was truly overwhelming to see and I was heartened by the stories of just how far some of these kids had come and the improvements in their day to day lives since Solemen first paid them a visit.

Families graciously relayed their stories and I was fortunate enough to have a cuddle with beautiful baby Azdkia, a wee little tot with a heart condition and down syndrome as well a chat with Ibu Deri and her grandson Kadek, who has cerebral palsy. The afternoon was an emotional one and it was hard to keep a dry eye at times when I thought not only about the challenges that lay ahead for these children, but also the inspirational assistance from groups such as Solemen and The Canggu Club and their efforts to improve the day to day lives of these children and their families.

For more information about the Cubby House Kids’ Club VIP program or how you can help support Solemen and their continuing work with these local families, please go to their website to view new and current cases requiring ongoing support. With continued charitable assistance from organisations such as Solemen Indonesia and The Canggu Club, as well as a little help from the likes of you and I, we can help to make these children and their families a better life.

Summer Movie Fun on the Big Screen @ Splash

20150702-CANGGUNEWS-STARLIGHT-MOVIES

Perfectly timed for school holiday fun, Canggu Club has added yet another arrow to their quiver of entertainment options with Starlight Movies at the popular Splash Water Park! Commencing just over a week ago, their premiere screening kicked off on Sunday June 28 with toddlers, tweens and teens grabbing their tubes and a spot to float to watch family friendly films.

Starlight movies are the ideal summer entertainer for warm dry evenings. A chance to enjoy watching the stars, under the stars from the cool comfort of your pool tube! The concept may not necessarily be new, as pool side movies have enjoyed popularity for sometime, however Canggu Club’s massive inflatable screen is certainly the latest in imported outdoor entertainment technology along with their high definition 3D projector!

Movies are scheduled to screen Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings throughout Summer. It’s an opportunity for youngsters and the young at heart to keep cool, recline in your very own ‘aqua chair’ and watch the latest Hollywood blockbusters, cult classics and family favourites.

Filmgoers can feast from the full dining menu at Splash and take advantage of the happy hour drink prices as well as enjoy traditional movie munchie favourites like popcorn, slushies and gelato.

In addition to the weekly Starlight Movie schedule, the brand new big screen will also be an awesome alternative to watch major sporting events, including tonight’s nail biting State of Origin Rugby League decider between Queensland and New South Wales which will be screened on The Sports Field. Take advantage of this divine dry season weather and enjoy the evening outdoors. You won’t miss any moments of the match and everyone can get a bird’s eye view of the game on the big screen. I can’t wait for the atmosphere and excitement on Grand Final Day!

Not just intended for movies and sport, the screen can also be made available for group presentations and product launches, private parties, special celebrations, fundraisers and staff functions. Imagine the impact a powerpoint display, slideshow or photo medley on a five metre screen would have on your group of guests!

Weekly movie schedules will be posted at Canggu Club or you can go to their website for further information. To book the big screen for your next function, group gathering or party, email the events team on:
