December 12th 2016 – Wrap Your Laughing Gear Around a Lamington or Two!

Howzat! You can almost hear the sound of sizzling snags and smell the onions on the grill……..
The festive season long forgotten, Christmas trees are packed away and hangovers from New Year’s Day, a distant memory (thank goodness!) But don’t get down in the doldrums at the prospect of long working weeks with no sign of fun in sight. Canggu Club is getting ready to fire up the barbecue for their annual Australia Day Party on Sunday January 22nd.

Nope, the Aussie’s haven’t changed the date of their national day but it’s much easier to celebrate on a Sunday, so they’ve decided to start the party early! Join them from noon on January 22nd for an afternoon of everything Australian, Oi! Of course you don’t have to be from down under just to join the fun, but it might help to have an Antipodean acquaintance to help decipher some ‘Aussieisms’ on the day. The more the merrier and it’s no secret that Australians do love a party!
There’ll be a swag of Aussie food specials to satisfy any yearnings for a little taste of home. Wrap your laughing gear around meat pies, sausage rolls, a lamington or two and of course it’s not ‘Straya Day without a sausage from the Barbie and a bucket of prawns…nom…nom…nom. If you’ve still got room for dessert, there will be a pavlova eating competition a little later in the avo, (though word has it the Aussies may have pinched the pav idea from the Kiwis across the ditch….Maaf!)

Join in for the 20/20 cricket match from 3pm in the afternoon. It’s Australia Vs The Rest of The World but I’d warrant it’ll hardly be a question of origin when it comes time to don the pads and face the pitch. As well as this iconic Australia Day activity, there’s more in the entertainment line up than you can poke a stick at with AFL and NRL handball, thong throwing (that’s footwear not underwear thank you!), Slip ‘n Slide action, Ultimate Frisbee and of course, the Classic Catch competition.

Classic Aussie Tunes will play throughout the day, the Australian Open is live in The Sports Bar and it’s Happy Hour prices all day. Hip, hip hooray!

The celebrations are provided as a free event for everyone to enjoy. Should non members wish to also enjoy the facilities of Splash Water Park they can do so for the usual Rp300K and Rp180K for adults and kids respectively, providing the chance to cool off after cricket!

Celebrate everything Australian and much, much more with The Canggu Club on Sunday January 22nd and enjoy lots of laughs, a laid back lunch and no doubt be entertained by a larrikin or two. Bring your cozzies and your cricketing prowess and a huge appetite for fun! For further details, check out the Canggu Club website and go to “What’s On”. cangguclub.com

November 28th 2016 – Give a Little Extra and Grant a Wish This Christmas

20161214-blog-pr-nov-28

For many of us who celebrate Christmas, December 25th brings the excitement of presents and precious time spent with family. It’s a time to connect with loved ones, recognise the significance of this special day and revel in the joy of giving and receiving. Why not extend that festive spirit beyond your immediate family this year and grant a wish to some youngsters who are a little less fortunate by participating in Canggu Club’s annual Wishing Tree.

Every year, a stunning Christmas Tree stands resplendent in the foyer of The Canggu Club, but instead of shimmering with tinsel and baubles, this tree boasts decorations of a different kind. It is more a symbol of hope and generosity. Attached to the branches are tags bearing the names and details of each child from the Jodie O’Shea Orphanage in Denpasar, along with one item they would wish to receive on Christmas Day. You won’t find any requests for iPhones or laptops here. Preferences are simple, day to day items, the likes that most of us (and our children) might take for granted such as T shirts, sports shoes, clothing and back packs.

Before you head out to do your Christmas shopping this year, select a tag or two from the wishing tree and take the time to purchase a gift for this child. Each tag contains all of the necessary details about the child to help you choose an appropriate gift. Once you select your gift recipient, register your details with the staff at reception. After you have purchased and wrapped your pressie, please drop it to Canggu Club reception by December 20th at the latest. This will allow enough time to ensure there is something for every child and nobody misses out. You may select as many tags as you wish.

Come December 25th, the kids from Jodie O’Shea will join in Christmas celebrations at The Canggu Club, enjoying a buffet lunch, afternoon at Splash Waterpark and of course, a visit from Santa when all of these donated gifts will be distributed to the children. It’s always a wonderful day of laughter and fun filled with generous sprinkling of Christmas spirit. The looks of excitement and appreciation on the faces of these children as they unwrap a gift chosen especially for them is perhaps the best part of the day!

Spread your Christmas cheer a little further this year and put a smile on the face of a youngster less fortunate than yourself by granting their simple request. Anything you can give will be greatly appreciated. The Wishing Tree will take pride of place in Canggu Club foyer from December 1st and you are welcome to select your gift recipient up until December 20th. For further details about this year’s Wishing Tree, speak with the team at Canggu Club reception or email: info@cangguclub.com . After all, Christmas is not simply about opening presents, it is also about opening our hearts. Dig a little deeper this festive season and see someone smile. X

November 7th 2016: Bounce Mania Moves Back to The Weekend

20161214-blog-pr-nov-07

Weekdays are busy enough with a combination of school, sports and afternoon activities for parents to juggle, not to mention their own work commitments! That’s why we’ve moved our ever popular Mini Mania and Bounce Mania sessions to a more student friendly schedule. Your suggestions did not go unnoticed and now the kids have even more opportunities to get manic on Fridays, Saturdays and even Sunday afternoons!

With two sessions to encompass all age groups, Mini Mania and Bounce Mania will retain their popular Friday evening spots of 5pm-7pm (Mini Mania) and 7pm-10pm (Bounce Mania) respectively. Previous Thursday sessions have now been replaced with more convenient Saturday evening time slots so kids can be a part of the fun without worrying about waking up in time for school the following day. As if that wasn’t enough time to partake in some aerial action, Bounce Mania is on again every Sunday afternoon from 2pm until 5pm. Still an early finish so there’s enough time to prepare for the new week that lies ahead.

As parents we like to be secure in the knowledge that our kids are safe and sound but still having fun wherever they are. Bounce Bali’s weekly ‘Mania’ sessions are just the ticket to provide good clean (and incredibly active) fun for kids who just want to get together with their friends for a great time! It’s an opportunity to get them off their iPads and phones and into some social and physical activity as well as giving mum and dad a break for an hour or three! Parents can drop their cherubs off and have some child free time for grown up stuff or if they prefer to stay around for the younger ones, they’re more than welcome to sit upstairs at Strike Bar and view all of the activity from above.

Recent renovations at Bounce Bali mean that facilities are even better for bouncers. A new air bag has been installed to replace the foam landing pit, making for a safer and more hygienic landing pad. Two new elite tramps have also been added along with another vertical wall walk! Tiggers keen to develop their tricks will have an opportunity to do so when world champion trampolinist and gymnast, Greg Roe returns in late November to hold his second training camp at Bounce Bali. This three day workshop, (including optional sleepover at Bounce Bali) is a unique opportunity for budding aerialists to hone their skills and develop safe practices to ensure correct form and reduce any chance of injury.

Mini Mania and Bounce Mania sessions are open to everyone and there is no need to be a member to be a part of the action! It’s super cheap and so much fun at just RP125,000 per person for the two or three hour session. Bounce socks are mandatory for safety purposes and can easily be purchased at Bounce Bali reception for just RP25K. Canggu Club Gold and Platinum members are also eligible for a 20% discount for every session.

For further information about Mini Mania and Bounce Mania, or other promotions and events at Bounce Bali, go to their website: bouncebali.com speak with staff at reception.

Just a little way down the road from The Canggu Club at Berawa Beach is Bali’s newest offering in beach clubs – FINNS (another gem in the Semara Collection crown). With 2016 being FINNS very first festive season, they’ve decided to blast into 2017 with a two day festival!

20161214-blog-festive-03

Their New Year’s Eve Party is strictly adults only with five hours of late night fun from 10pm til 3am. It’s free entry for everyone and a minimum F&B spend applies, the amount depending on how close you want to be to the centre of the action, whether it be daybed, booth or bar. Dancers, DJs, fireworks, stilt walkers and world class entertainment continues into the wee hours so you can bring in the New Year Bali style at the hottest new venue on the island. Don your swimwear and the desire to party!

Now we all know that a few too many bubbly beverages from the night before can be cause for a little fogginess the following morning so what better way to clear the head than with a recovery pool party back at FINNS on New Year’s Day. An all ages affair, this time the whole family can join the fun from midday until midnight. Once again it’s free entry for everyone with daybeds, booths and lounge areas requiring the predetermined minimum spend. Keep youngsters entertained for the afternoon with family entertainment on the lawn while the big kids ease back at the pool bar and dance to DJ sets until well after the sun goes down.

Plan ahead this year and avoid the frustration of trying to find somewhere to spend Christmas and New Year’s. To book online and secure your spot at Bali’s best party venues this silly season or for full details regarding all of these events, go to cangguclub.com or finnsbeachclub.com. No need to look any further, these guys have festive season celebrations wrapped and ready to go!

Recently launched on November 7th, this new group exercise program is the perfect solution for those who want to improve their fitness but can’t face the inside of a gym or have no mojo or motivation to train themselves.

Seriously, what could be more encouraging to get your butt off the couch and out of the house than the chance for fun (and fitness) in such a stunning location like the rolling green lawns of Semara Beach House adjacent to FINNS Beach Club! If Bali’s sunshine, the sound of surf and a sensational view can’t get you moving then I’m afraid nothing will!

With a choice of classes the likes of Boxfit, Pilates, Yoga, Bootcamp or even Cross Training, you can no longer use the excuse that there is nothing on the schedule to suit you. Each class is geared to all levels of fitness with more challenging options for those who already boast a moderate modicum of fitness. All you need to bring is yourself and your enthusiasm! Equipment and towels are provided and FINNS Fitness trainers are internationally skilled and experienced to ensure you’ll get the most out of your workout minus any injury.

Here Comes Santa Claus and Summer Holidays…

20161214-blog-santa

I’m sorry…..where did 2016 go again? Believe it or not, the end of another calendar year is nigh and that means Summer holidays and Santa are right around the corner. Pretty soon many of us will be taking off to spend the silly season with family across the globe but before we do it’s time to celebrate the end of term. In keeping with tradition The Junior Sports Academy and The Canggu Club will hold their 9th Annual Christmas Bazaar and end of term party on the last day of the CCS semester, Friday December 16th.

It’s a fantastic afternoon chock full of festive spirit and some seriously irresistible Christmas shopping bargains. As the biggest market of the year it attracts a wealth of local vendors selling everything from shoes, clothing, artwork, food, homewares, jewellery, couches for canines and cats (I kid you not…) and a host of other gift worthy goodies. Trust me, many a Christmas stocking has been stuffed from the stalls of the Canggu Club Christmas Bazaar and I challenge anyone to walk away without buying at least one thing!

20161214-blog-santa-2

Bazaar bargain shopping begins at midday with a gymnastics presentation from the students of the Junior Sports Academy a little later in the afternoon. These end of term parties are always a terrific opportunity to discover how well JSA participants have progressed throughout the term and a chance for the kids to showcase all of the new skills they have developed during previous weeks.

As well as a few friendly fun and games across the avo, every member of the JSA and their families are welcome to enjoy the slides at Splash Waterpark from 12 midday until 6pm, free of charge!

Now it wouldn’t be a party without some tasty snacks and Christmas cheer so Bistro C will provide F&B specials throughout the afternoon and guests are encouraged to stay on for dinner once the market is over. Remember everyone is welcome and Canggu Club Gold and Platinum card holders are still entitled to 50% discount on food and beverage after 5pm! Once the sun goes down and the stalls are stacked away, Canggu Club will bring out the big screen and bean bags to get ready for their starlight Christmas movie presentation. A S’more (or four) for dessert and you’ll really think it’s Christmas!

20161214-blog-santa-3

Anyone interested in participating in the Canggu Club Christmas Bazaar as a vendor is welcome to email eka.andi@cangguclub.com for details and registration. Due to the continued success of this particular market, (I mean, where else do you get to do your Christmas shopping and enjoy a wine and a water slide in the one place!!) securing a stall is on a first come, first served basis and tables are limited so get in quick! Registrations are open now until 6pm on December 10th.
If you’re like me and love Christmas and the silly season build up, mark this one in your diaries. Friday December 16th @ Canggu Club – I’ll be there with my santa hat and shopping bags!

The Soul and Spirit of Indonesia – A David Metcalfe Exhibition

The Soul and Spirit of Indonesia - A David Metcalfe Exhibition

No one can deny the world’s largest archipelago is indeed incredible, however few have captured the sheer beauty of this country and the diversity of its populace than long term Bali resident and internationally acclaimed photographer, David Metcalfe. ‘Dayak Dave’ as he is affectionately known due to his continuous efforts to preserve the culture of indigenous Indonesian tribes such as the Dayaks in Kalimantan, has been a resident on the island for over 9 years. During this time he has travelled extensively throughout the country, his photographs providing a visual travel journal for those of us yet to discover the true extent of this nation’s heterogeneity.

An accomplished writer, he has already produced three books on Bali, Borneo and Indonesia and last year opened the Taksu Photo Gallery in Ubud. It’s a centre designed to bring photographers together from around the island and beyond to share their craft and learn from one another.

The Canggu Club and Bistro C Bali are honoured to have the opportunity to host the official opening of David’s newest photographic exhibition – The Soul and Spirit of Indonesia from 5pm on Sunday November 27th. Join them for a unique photographic journey through Indonesia and hear a personal account of David’s travels over the past ten years throughout some lesser known areas of the archipelago. David will also provide commentary on a few of his favourite images from this new collection.

This is a free event commencing from 5pm at The Canggu Club. Make an evening of it with traditional Sunday roast available from Bistro C and live music providing entertainment from 5.30pm onwards. Canggu Club Gold, Platinum and Silver Cardholders are eligible for 50% off food and beverages from 5pm and kids are also welcome with a free movie screening in the air conditioned Kozy Kids room from 6pm.

Presentation of David’s new exhibition will commence from 7pm, at which point he will lead discussion about some of the key photographs from the exhibition then open the floor to invite any questions from the guests. This is a unique opportunity to speak with David about his extensive travels throughout Indonesia and to purchase a Metcalfe original from his latest exhibition along with a few photographs on offer for this particular evening only.

In an effort to continue his fundraising efforts for some of the programs David is supporting in Kalimantan, such as the establishment of a floating library and Dayak teacher training at Bali’s Pelangi School, The Canggu Club will be auctioning off a few of David’s prize pieces. Other items will be raffled on the night and David will also have a supply of his books, cards and 2017 calendars available for purchase. Now there’s a great idea for a Christmas gift! Raffles and auctions will take place at 8.30pm, proceeds going in full to these incredible ongoing initiatives in Kalimantan.

This promises to be an exciting, entertaining and culturally rich evening and one not to be missed. Subsequent to the evening’s official launch of the new exhibition, works from The Soul and Spirit of Indonesia will remain on display at The Canggu Club for a predetermined period and are also available for sale. For any further details about the evening, please go to the website: cangguclub.com

Bali Barong Swim Team Brings Home the Medals

Despite being in their infancy, Bali’s newest junior swim team is already enjoying considerable success in the pool! The Bali Barongs is a team formed by trainer Luisa Striani and keen swim school students from the Junior Sports Academy. Though it may only boast minimal numbers at this stage, their recent results at the last two national meets indicate there are even bigger things yet to come!

Participation from a small contingent of the team at a recent meet in Yogyakarta on October 22nd and 23rd produced outstanding results including 3 gold medals, 2 silver and 2 bronze! Congratulations must go to Eva and Laura Pet and Claire Joy Forrer for their incredible performances throughout the event.

Just over 2 weeks ago, another group of hopefuls made the trek to Jakarta to take part in second meet, some of them competing on a national level for the very first time! Perseverance, training and a positive attitude clearly paid off for youngster, Olivia Kerr Muir who, participating in her first ever swim meet secured 1 silver and 2 bronze medals.

Esdra Setianto, Cooper Todd (1 Bronze medal) Alexander Renwich and Rogan Pinto all produced sensational performances with Laura Pet securing a silver and a bronze and Claire Joy Forrer taking home an incredible 5 gold and 3 silver, the third best female for her age group in the competition.

Second in her age group for the meet was 18 year old Eva Pet, a recent student of Canggu Community School. Now graduated, she is currently enjoying a gap year and is focusing intently on training to secure a scholarship for study in the United States. Clearly the hard work is paying dividends as her performances in the pool have already caught the eye of a number of college scouts from the US. The talented 18 year old also brought home a swag of medals from the event, adding 3 gold, 2 silver and 3 bronze to her trophy cabinet!

Performances by the team on the whole were outstanding with everyone posting new personal bests for the meet! Irrespective of the small amount of competitors, (the Bali Barongs team formed only recently) they still managed to achieve 6th ranking in the competition and look set to be a force to be reckoned with for the future!

The Bali Barongs is looking for new members to join this already successful team! Everyone is welcome and training is on every day for every level at The Canggu Club pool. With the inter school swimming carnival fast approaching, it’s time to kick your training up a notch to see success in the water. Being part of a team like Bali Barongs means making new friends, building strength, success and camaraderie. Get your cozzie on and get ready to join this winning team in the pool!

With another meet scheduled for November 26th and 27th, I’m sure this is just the beginning for this talented group of swimmers. Stay tuned……..from little things, big things grow! For more information regarding the Bali Barong swim team, email Luisa Striani: luisastriani@gmail.com or email the Junior Sports Academy team on: jsa@cangguclub.com
